Hey adventurers! If you're itching for the open road but want to travel light, my custom truck cap camper — dubbed the "Tramper" by my daughter — might just inspire you. After years of towing bigger RVs since my first Airstream in 2008, I craved a nimbler setup for off-grid exploration. So, I transformed the bed of my 2014 Ram 2500 into a compact, self-sufficient camper for about $5,000. The full video tour above has every detail, but here's an overview to whet your appetite.
Why Go Small?
Big RVs are great for comfort but can't always handle rugged, remote spots. I wanted a lighter footprint to chase adventure wherever the road leads. After some sketching (and getting the wife's approval), I built a camper that's a cozy mobile office, sleeps two, and packs essentials like a sink with hot/cold water, an outdoor shower, a toilet, a microwave for movie-night popcorn, and a solar-powered system for off-grid freedom.
Key Features
Under the bed, four compartments house everything from a portable toilet with privacy curtain to kitchen supplies, a 7-gallon freshwater tank, and plumbing with PEX lines. A versatile table doubles as a desk, dining area, or nightstand. The kitchen sports a modified dog bowl sink, Corian countertop, and a Grizzly cooler, with drawers for utensils and snacks like peanut butter (a must!).
A Bluetti AC200 power station with 300W of solar panels keeps things running, while a Thule awning and custom locks add comfort and security. For entertainment, a Bugani M118 Bluetooth speaker and iPad mount create a killer movie setup. The bed expands from a single to a double with fold-out panels and foam cushions. Every inch is optimized — check out the video for the full scoop on clever storage, magnetic lights, and more.
